    • There are physical signs of injury, such as bruises, sores, burns, cuts, or black eyes. Such injuries may be hidden (e.g., behind sunglasses or
    • with clothing)
  • The victim makes implausible excuses for injuries or absences ("I fell down the stairs").
  • The victim displays personality changes (angry, depressed, moody, defensive, etc.)
  • The victim becomes withdrawn, or suddenly fearful.
  • The victim becomes depressed, or more irritable or agitated than normal.
  • The victim has difficulty sleeping at night, or may display excessive tiredness (can be a symptom of depression)
  • The victim's appetite changes for better or worse. Weight loss or gain may occur (can be a symptom of depression).
  • The victim's self-esteem lowers.
  • The victim is distracted and has difficulty concentrating.
  • The victim neglects hygiene (becomes smelly, goes unwashed; may be an attempt to ward off a sexual predator if a child, or as a consequence of depression).
  • Changes are noted in the victim's personal appearance or in the appearance of his or her home or living environment.
  • The victim complains of pain in the genital region (more common in children).
  • For older children and adults, the victim 'acts out', becoming sexually promiscuous, and/or using drugs.
  • Elders may display confusion

What are the Long Term Consequences of Child Sexual Abuse?

No comments:
Truth That Hurts......

What are the Long Term Consequences of Child Sexual Abuse?

FACT: THE CONSEQUENCES OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE OFTEN FOLLOW VICTIMS INTO ADULTHOOD. MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA THAT THE EFFECTS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE ARE SO PERVASIVE IN ADULT LIFE. ALTHOUGH SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE ARE NEGATIVELY IMPACTED AS A WHOLE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT MANY INDIVIDUAL SURVIVORS DO NOT SUFFER THESE CONSEQUENCES. CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE DOES NOT NECESSARILY SENTENCE A VICTIM TO AN IMPAIRED LIFE.

FACT: SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEMS ARE A COMMON CONSEQUENCE FOR ADULT SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE.

  • Female adult survivors of child sexual abuse are nearly three times more likely to report substance use problems (40.5% versus 14% in general population), (Simpson and Miller, 2002).
  • Male adult CSA victims 2.6 times more likely to report substance use problems (65% versus 25% in general population), (Simpson and Miller, 2002).
  • Abused or neglected individuals 1.5 times more likely to report lifetime illicit drug use (Widom, Marmorstein, & White, 2006).

FACT: MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ARE A COMMON LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCE OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE.

  • Adult women who were sexually abused as a child are more than twice as likely to suffer from depression as women who were not sexually abused (Rohde, et. al., 2008).
  • Adults with a history of child sexual abuse are more than twice as likely to report a suicide attempt (Dube, et. al., 2005, Waldrop, et. al., 2007).
  • Girls who are sexually abused are 3 times more likely to develop psychiatric disorders than girls who are not sexually abused (Day, et. al., 2003; Kendler, et. al., 2000; Voeltanz, et. al., 1999).
  • Among male survivors, more than 70% seek psychological treatment for issues such as substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide (Walrath, et. al., 2003).

FACT: OBESITY AND EATING DISORDERS ARE MORE COMMON IN WOMEN WHO HAVE A HISTORY OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE.

  • 20 – 24 year-old women who were sexually abused as children were four times more likely than their non-abused peers to be diagnosed with an eating disorder (Fuemmeler, et. al., 2009).
  • Middle-aged women who were sexually abused as children were twice as likely to be obese when compared with their non-abused peers (Rohde, et. al., 2008).

FACT: CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH PHYSICAL HEALTH PROBLEMS IN ADULTHOOD. IT IS THEORIZED THAT THIS IS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND OTHER RISKS THAT SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE FACE.

  • Generally, adult victims of child sexual abuse have higher rates of health care utilization and report significantly more health complaints compared to adults without a CSA history (Arnow, 2004; Golding, Cooper, and George, 1997; Thompson, Arias, Basile and Desai, 2002). This is true for both self reported doctor’s visits and objective examination of medical records (Newman et al., 2000). These health problems represent a burden both to the survivor and the healthcare system.
  • Adult survivors of child sexual abuse are at greater risk of a wide range of conditions that are non-life threatening and are potentially psychosomatic in nature. These include fibromyalgia (Walker et al, 1997), severe premenstrual syndrome (Golding, Taylor, Menard, & King, 2000), chronic headaches (Peterlin, Ward, Lidicker, & Levin, 2007), irritable bowel syndrome and a wide range of reproductive and sexual health complaints, including excessive bleeding, amenorrhea, pain during intercourse and menstrual irregularity (Golding, 1996).
  • Not only do survivors of child sexual abuse have more minor health conditions, they are at greater risk for more serious conditions as well. Adults with a history of child sexual abuse are 30% more likely than their non-abused peers to have a serious medical condition such as diabetes, cancer, heart problems, stroke or hypertension (Sachs-Ericsson, et. al., 2005).
  • Male sexual abuse survivors have twice the HIV-infection rate of non-abused males (Zierler, et. al., 1991). In a study of HIV-infected 12-20 year olds, 41 percent reported a sexual abuse history (Dekker, et. al. 1990).

FACT: ADULT SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE ARE MORE LIKELY TO BECOME INVOLVED IN CRIME, BOTH AS A PERPETRATOR AND AS A VICTIM. THIS IS LIKELY A PRODUCT OF A HIGHER RISK FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEMS AND ASSOCIATED LIFESTYLE FACTORS.

  • Adult survivors were more than twice as likely to be arrested for a property offense (9.3% versus 4.4%), (Siegel and Williams, 2003).
  • As adults, child sexual abuse victims were almost twice as likely to be arrested for a violent offense (20.4% versus 10.7%), (Siegel & Williams, 2003).
  • Males who have been sexually abused are more likely to violently victimize others (Walrath, et. al., 2003).

FACT: ALTHOUGH DIFFICULT TO QUANTIFY, LOGIC TELLS US THAT THE CONSEQUENCES OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE (SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES, MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS, BECOMING A PARENT AS A TEEN AND POOR PHYSICAL HEALTH) RESULT IN LOSS OF EARNING POTENTIAL OVER A LIFETIME.

  • An average of quality-of-life court awards (primarily lost earning potential) for a survivor of child sexual abuse is $115,000 in 2010 dollars (U.S. Department of Justice, 1996).

Conquering Psychological Trauma

Conquering Psychological Trauma

Part 1 of a 7-part series
Explaining what trauma is, and how you can overcome it.

What does Psychological Trauma actually mean?
The most effective way to define psychological trauma (also called emotional trauma) is by describing the horrible ways it affects your life:
shock, suffering, worry, pain, stress, upset,
strain, torture, distress, misery, disturbance, injury,
damage, ordeal, anguish, hurt, wound, agony
Ultimately, trauma is the tragic result of extraordinarily stressful events that completely shatter your sense of security – leaving you feeling alone in your suffering… helpless and vulnerable in a dangerous world.

What causes Trauma?
Psychological trauma is a subjective phenomenon. No experience or event is inherently traumatic – ultimately it’s how you, as an individual, experience something that determines whether it is traumatic to your psyche.
Your emotional response determines the level of distress that you feel – the more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.
Experiences that often result in emotional trauma include sexual abuse, bullying, psychological abuse, mass violence (experiencing it directly or being exposed to it indirectly, like through media), catastrophic events (like earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves), even long-term exposure to extreme poverty – the list is almost endless.
The key is that what may not trigger trauma in one person may be quite devastating to someone else.

Symptoms of Trauma – The Trauma Symptom Inventory (TSI)
If you’ve gone through a traumatic experience or suffered repeated trauma you may be struggling with upsetting emotions, frightening memories, or a sense of constant danger that you just can’t kick. The trauma also may have left you feeling numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people.
The Trauma Symptom Inventory is a useful tool in accurately identifying trauma symptoms, as well as in measuring the degree to which these symptoms are harming you. The inventory has 10 clinical scales that assess a broad array of trauma-related symptom domains:
  • Anxious Arousal
  • Depression
  • Anger/Irritability
  • Intrusive Experiences
  • Defensive Avoidance
  • Dissociation
  • Sexual Concerns
  • Dysfunctional Sexual Behavior
  • Impaired Self-reference
  • Tension Reduction Behavior
In order to properly treat your trauma disorder, a counsellor must first understand the cause of the trauma, the specific ways the trauma is affecting you, and how you are coping (be it adaptively or maladaptively) with your traumatized psyche.
Only then can the focus shift to helping you recover….

Recovering from Trauma
When bad things happen to you, it can take time to get over the pain and feel safe again. With the right treatment and support you can truly recover from emotional trauma, and live the unburdened, happy life you were meant to live. Whether the trauma-inducing event (or series of events) happened recently or years ago, you can surely heal.

Mommy there's MONSTERS under the BED........

No comments:
Truth That Hurts......

Now this is an image that matches my thoughts,
exactly to describe what I dealt with as a child.
I could not have came up with any better graphic than this artist has.
As a child I was terrified of the dark and the unknown
characters that my ABUSER put into my head.
I slept with a stick under my bed, because my Father had promised me
that it would keep all the Bad imaginary monsters far away from me
and I would be free to sleep safely through the night.
Boy what a lot of faith I put in  my Father, it did pacified my mind and
allow me the security it took to be able to fall asleep, adequate
sleep is just as important for a child as nutrition is
in order for them to develop as expected.
Development of the mind from beginning to end is a never ending process,
which any traumatic experience is consequentially life altering,
The after effects may take years to even begin to show,
depending on the individuals ability to conceptually intake
the feelings felt front he remembrance of the pain.
Secondary damages also exist long after the actual abuse takes place.

Breakfast reading from the Village Voice Empire:T arver's daughter spoke up after he was busted for sexually assaulting his grandchild, telling authorities that he first abused her at age four. Later, the other kids shared their own horrible memories. Westword has the story.
